Coxhoe

Site type: DMV

The site is located to the east of the modern day settlement of Coxhoe. This is a recent development and not connected with the medieval settlement. The medieval village was located to the south of Coxhoe Hall, originally built in 1400 and much remodelled and rebuilt, it was demolished in 1952. [1, 2] Faint earthworks can still be seen of the settlement. A number of parallel rows of crofts and tofts have been identified. [3] The settlement first appears in the fourteenth century, but it suffered at various points of its history with the manor house and mill recorded as in ruin in 1418. [3] It is possible that the end of the settlement came in the fifteenth century.

Appears in the Gazetteer of Deserted Medieval Villages known in 1968.
