Easton

Site type: DMV

A chapel was recorded in 1884 but nothing remains in the area now. [1] The site currently has a large farm complex at the centre, and there are faint areas of ridge and furrow in the vicinity. The area is now known as Chapeltown. Easton is currently located to the north of this area and contains a small scatter of houses. The HER reference places the shrunken settlement at Chapeltown. [2]

The documentary evidence supports the presence of a church with the Taxatio in 1291 recording a church. However the attribution of this to this particular Easton may be questioned. Easton appears in the Lay Subsidy of 1336 as the subsidiary settlement to Solport. It continues to appear during the fourteenth century in the taxation documents then disappears from the record suggesting either an early desertion or that the settlement amounted to no more than a small cluster of buildings.

Appears in the Gazetteer of Deserted Medieval Villages known in 1968.
