Easby, Great

Site type: Doubtful

A cluster of three farm complexes currently exists at Great Easby. Within the 1968 Gazetteer the grid references for settlements at both Great and Little Easby are given as rough estimates, and also at the same location. It is perhaps more likely that Great Easby was located closer to the farm complexes and the grid reference has been altered to reflect this. However it is unclear why a settlement has been suggested here. There is very little documentary evidence for settlement in the area, and none specifically for Great Easby until the late sixteenth century, with references to just Easby from the late fourteenth century. [1] No physical evidence is visible on the ground. Ford’s map of 1839 shows simply a settlement at Easby (roughly the position of Great Easby), but other earlier maps show no settlement at all in this area. Whether there was any great concentration of activity at this locale is difficult to ascertain so currently it is listed as doubtful.

Appears in the Gazetteer of Deserted Medieval Villages known in 1968.
